006 – Sounding Bottle

Pipe and bell sounds from a bottle  

Introduction to:  

Vibration, pitch, water level, musical instrument, wavelength.    

Material:  

  • Glass bottle  
  • clapper, e.g. teaspoon    

Instructions:  

Whistle:   

Blow into the neck of the bottle until a sound is produced.   

Fill different amounts of water into the bottle and listen to how the sound changes.   

Bell:   

Tap the bottle with the clapper to make a sound.   

Again, fill more water into the bottle and pay attention to the change in the sound.  

Observation:   

Whistle:   

Blowing into the bottle produces a sound like a whistle.   

The higher the water level, the higher the tone.     

Bell:   

Tapping the bottle with a spoon also produces a tone. This time, however, the pitch decreases as the water level increases.
