005 – Standing Sound Wave

Playing the flute in water  

Introduction to:  

Vibrations, acoustics, waves, natural frequency

Material:

  1. flute (must be submerged in water during the experiment)
  2. water container

Execution:

  • Cover all of the flute’ holes and blow into it.
  • Dip the end of the flute into the water while blowing.
  • In order to hear different changes to the pitch, try submerging the flute more and less.

Observation:

  • The tune’s pitch changes as the flute is dipped into water.
  • The larger the submerged part of the flute, the higher the pitch.
