063 – Reflection versus diffuse reflection
Introduction to:
- Reflection
- Light scattering
- Dispersion of light
Material:
- Safety note: Risk of damage to the retina, therefore use LASERS with low radiation power. Never work without LASER safety goggles!)
- Mirror
- 2 sheets of white paper (A5)
- Glue / Adhesive Tape
Instructions:
- Glue a sheet of paper together to form a cylindrical tube.
- First, place the tube on the mirror and shine the laser pointer through the tube as vertically as possible onto the mirror. Make sure that the reflected beam does not hit the tube!
- Now place the tube on the second sheet of paper and shine the laser pointer almost vertically on the paper again.
Observation:
- On the first attempt, the cylinder remains dark, you can see the reflected beam either on the hand or on the ceiling.
- In the second attempt, the whole cylinder glows in the color of the laser pointer.
Explication:
- While the light beam on the mirror is only reflected in one direction, the beam is scattered in all directions on the rough surface of the paper. These beams illuminate the paper cylinder from the inside.
